This Saturday has seen the announcement of and pre-orders go up for a joint release of WHFB Daemons of Chaos and 40k Chaos Daemons. There are a lot of models if you like that sort of thing but now onto the good stuff, the Codex and Army Books.
Warhammer 40,000 - Codex: Chaos Daemons
You have your regular Codex, same price and format as Chaos Space Marines and Dark Angels. You also have not one but four(!) different limited edition versions to chose from: one for each chaos god.The Regular Codex (for people with less money than sense):
Price: £30
Authour: Phil Kelly
Cover art: An awesome picture of a Khorne Bloodletter/Herald of Khorne.
Limited Editions (for people who love to waste money):
Dust jacket pics (front and back covers)
Khorne:
Tzeentch:
Nurgle:
Slaanesh:
Hardcover:
Collectors certificate
Details: Everything the same as the non limited ed version plus extras
Extras: Matt dust jackets with gloss illustrations by John Blanche on the front and the symbol of the respective god on the back. Under the dust jacket it looks like every edition is the same, "Underneath, the hardcover finish is textured and with subtle artwork and lettering". Also included is a Black bookmark ribbon, black edging to the pages and a certificate showing what number yours is.
Price: £55
Product Codes: Khorne - 60040115008; Tzeentch - 60040115009; Nurgle - 60040115007; Slaanesh - 60040115006
As it seems with all of these, there is no indication of how many copies of this are being sold. Codex: Chaos Space Marines was 1000 copies and Codex: Dark Angels was 2000. I would hope that these are not 2000 per god and are instead 500 each. But we will have to wait and see.
Have ordered my Tzeentch one as I am a sucker for the Changer of Ways.
On a side note, keeping numbers hidden until delivery seems like a bad thing from my point of view. Most limited editions are sold with the number for sale up front, even Black Library do this. by keeping the number secret until delivery the system is open to abuse on the retailers side while also keeping the buyer uninformed.
Warhammer Fantasy Battle - Daemons of Chaos Army Book
You have the regular Army Book, same price and format as previous hard back WHFB army book releases. You also have, for the first time ever a limited edition WHFB army book release. They're really starting with a bang here with four army books, one for each of the chaos gods, just like the 40k release. The Regular Codex:
Details: 96 pages, Full Colour, Hardback
Authour: Matt Ward (bummer)
Product Code: 60030215003
Cover Art: Bloodletter or Herald of Khorne (Just as awesome as the 40k one)
Price: £30
Limited Editions:
Khorne:
Tzeentch:
Nurgle:
Slaanesh:
Hardcover:
Collectors certificate:
Details: Everything the same as the non limited ed version plus extras
Extras: Exactly the same as the 40k versions except different dust jacket and cover illustrations
Price: £55
Product Codes: Khorne - 60040215008; Tzeentch - 60040215009; Nurgle - 60040215007; Slaanesh - 60040215006
As for the numbers of each, nobody knows, as with the 40k limited eds, although it is generally the case that WHFB stufff sells less well than 40k, so either there are less of these or they will take much longer to sell out. (wish I could afford to get one of these as well)
Discussion
So there you have it, 8 limited editions and 2 regulars dropped like a bombshell on your wallet. total price for limited editions £55 x 8 = £440(!). Plus the regular editions for the ultimate must have them all collector = a cool £500.
The back cover images for the WHFB army books seem much nicer than the 40k ones although the Hardcover image for under the dust jacket seems nicer for the 40k codex so you win some you lose some. Dust jacket pictures are all John Blanche, all looking pretty stunning if you like his work.
it is worth noting that all of the Limited Ed. images seem to be mock ups, note the lack of perspective in the central images on the front cover pictures compared to the angle of the book itself. This seems slightly strange as you would think that they have completed their print run if they are taking advanced orders for them.
I will be keeping an eye on when these sell out and in what order and may report the information here. For now all the books are available to order from games workshop if they haven't all sold out while I was writing this!
